Loser

Paul Tannek, a good-natured student from a small Midwestern town, arrives in New York on a scholarship and finds himself out of step with the city almost immediately. His clothes, his manners and his inexperience with women mark him as an outsider, and the three roommates he is placed with make no secret of their contempt for him. He becomes fixated on Dora Diamond, a classmate, but she is involved with her literature professor, Edward Alcott, who wants the relationship kept quiet. Paul's roommates learn of the affair and try to turn it to their advantage, which complicates Paul's position further.

Amy Heckerling directed from her own screenplay and produced with John M. Eckert and Twink Caplan. Released in July 2000, the film came after Clueless (1995) in a directing run that began with Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982). Jason Biggs plays Paul, with Mena Suvari as Dora, Greg Kinnear as Professor Alcott, and Zak Orth, Thomas Sadoski and Jimmi Simpson as the roommates. The credited cast numbers 62 and the crew 96.
