Anora is a Brooklyn sex worker, the daughter of Uzbek immigrants, who speaks enough Russian that her employer assigns her to Russian-speaking clients. She meets Ivan, the reckless son of a wealthy Russian oligarch, and the two marry on impulse in Las Vegas. When word of the wedding reaches Moscow, Ivan's parents fly to New York determined to have the marriage annulled, and the life Anora had begun to imagine for herself is suddenly under threat.
Sean Baker wrote, directed and produced the film, which followed Red Rocket in his filmography. Mikey Madison plays Ani, with Mark Eydelshteyn as Ivan, Yuriy Borisov as Igor, Karren Karagulian as Toros and Vache Tovmasyan as Garnik heading a credited cast of 34.
Made for about 6 million dollars, the film went on to earn roughly 56 million worldwide, a return that made it a significant commercial success relative to its cost. On TMDB it holds a rating of 7.1 out of 10 from around 3,460 votes, indicating a generally favourable but not ecstatic audience response. The film runs 139 minutes and mixes comedy, drama and romance.
