Short description

The Strangers is a horror thriller about a couple whose quiet night at an isolated house turns into an ordeal. Kristen McKay and James Hoyt arrive at the Hoyt family's remote vacation home after a wedding, with tension between them after she turned down his marriage proposal. In the early hours of the morning, a knock at the door and a stranger's voice asking for someone named Tamara set off a night of mounting fear, as three masked figures besiege the house. With no one nearby to help, the two are forced to defend themselves against attackers whose only apparent aim is to terrorize them.

The film was released in 2008 and runs 86 minutes. Bryan Bertino directed and wrote the screenplay, with Doug Davison, Roy Lee and Nathan Kahane producing for Mad Hatter Entertainment, Vertigo Entertainment, Mandate Pictures and Rogue Pictures. It was Bertino's first feature as director, followed later by Mockingbird, The Monster, The Dark and the Wicked and Vicious. Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman lead the cast as Kristen and James, while Gemma Ward, Kip Weeks, Laura Margolis and Glenn Howerton appear in supporting roles. Made for roughly 9 million dollars, it took in about 83 million worldwide, a strong return on its budget.

Audience responses differ: on IMDb it holds 7.1/10 from 30 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.1/10 from 2,746 votes. A critics' rating of 5.1/10 from 167 reviews places it below both audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Although the film's promotional campaign heavily emphasized the tagline 'Based on a True Story,' the film's plot is entirely fictional, but contains some references to the Charles Manson gang.
  • The film was shot in chronological order.
  • Liv Tyler was sick with tonsillitis during filming.
