It Ends with Us
Short description
It Ends with Us is a romantic drama about Lily Bloom, a woman who moves to Boston to start over and open the flower shop she has always wanted. A chance meeting with Ryle Kincaid, a charming neurosurgeon, leads to a deep connection and a serious relationship. As they grow closer, however, Lily notices sides of Ryle that echo the household she grew up in. The return of Atlas Corrigan, her first love, unsettles the life she has built, and she comes to understand that she must rely on her own strength to decide what her future should look like. The film is based on Colleen Hoover's novel.
Justin Baldoni directs and appears as Ryle, with Blake Lively as Lily, Brandon Sklenar as Atlas, Jenny Slate as Allysa, Hasan Minhaj as Marshall and Kevin McKidd as Andrew Bloom. Baldoni wrote the screenplay with Christy Hall. It is his third feature as director, after Five Feet Apart and Clouds, and was produced by Alex Saks, Christy Hall and Jamey Heath for Columbia Pictures, Saks Picture Company and Wayfarer Studios.
Made for about 55 million dollars, the film took roughly 351 million dollars worldwide, a strong return on its budget. Audience response has been warmer than the critical one: it holds a 6.3 rating on IMDb from around 99,000 votes and a 7 on TMDB from about 2,000 votes, while the film critics' rating stands at 5.6 from 198 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- Filming began on May 5, 2023, in Hoboken, New Jersey.
- The casting of Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni in the lead roles sparked outrage among viewers because the characters were 23 and 30 years old in the original novel, while the actors are older. The novel's author, Colleen Hoover, stated that she would have liked to increase the age of the main characters in the film, as she had made them too young in the novel. She didn't realize at the time that it takes 6 to 12 years to train as a neurosurgeon.
