Short description
Dr. John Dolittle, a physician with the ability to speak with animals, is approached by a group of beavers whose forest home is threatened by a logging company. The animals' best chance of protecting the land lies in the presence of a protected bear species, but the forest holds only one bear, a female named Ava, leaving her unable to reproduce. Dolittle therefore sets out to bring in a circus bear named Archie, a performer unsuited to life in the wild, and to prepare him for his new surroundings and for Ava. With limited time, he must teach Archie how to survive in nature and how to court a companion.
Eddie Murphy returns as the title character, with Kristen Wilson, Kyla Pratt and Raven-Symoné playing his family, and Steve Zahn and Lisa Kudrow voicing the two bears. Steve Carr directed the film, his second feature after Next Friday, in a career that continued with Daddy Day Care, Paul Blart: Mall Cop and Freaky Friday. Larry Levin wrote the screenplay with Joshua Sternin and Jennifer Ventimilia, and John Davis and Joseph Singer produced.
Released in June 2001, the film runs 87 minutes. Made for a reported 70 million dollars, it took in about 176 million dollars worldwide, a return well above its cost. On IMDb it holds 4.8 out of 10 from roughly 50,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.3 out of 10 from about 1,800 votes. A critics' rating of 5.4 out of 10 from 106 reviews places it close to the audience scores, indicating a mixed response across all groups.
What's left behind the scenes
- In the scenes where Lucky and the wolf are shown together, the animals were never filmed simultaneously.
- When Archie hugs Doc, it was actually the trainer in the role, whom the bear knew very well.
- When Doc talks to the bear in the bathtub, warm water was poured in and the bear was instructed to get in. Dolittle was filmed separately, and then the images were combined.
- Whenever many animals of different species were needed in the frame, they were placed in a specific spot one at a time and filmed, after which animals of another species were brought and placed in their spot, and so on.
- In the scene where Archie the bear is put to sleep with a tranquilizer, the bear was not filmed. A stunt performer in a costume played this role.
- When Dr. Dolittle visits Steve's set in Australia, the animal is called an alligator, although alligators do not live in Australia, only crocodiles.
- When Dr. Dolittle visits the beaver, it offers him fish from its reserves. Beavers are herbivores and do not eat fish.
- John mistakenly calls the opossum a rodent, although it is actually a marsupial.
- The animal referred to as a 'laska' is actually a ferret.
