Battle of the Year

Battle of the Year follows Blake, a former basketball coach whose fortunes have faded, as he is persuaded by his friend Dante, a hip-hop figure from Los Angeles, to take charge of a team of American break dancers. Dante wants the United States, the country where the dance style began, to win an international crew competition held in France, a title the Americans have not claimed in fifteen years. The two men gather twelve of the nation's top dancers, but they have only about three months to turn individual talents into a cohesive crew. Blake has to find ways to motivate them before they face the strongest crews from around the world, who have dominated the event for years.

The film was directed by Benson Lee, whose next project is K-Pop: The Debut, and written by Chris Parker, Brin Hill and Parker again. Josh Holloway plays Blake, with Laz Alonso as Dante, Josh Peck as Franklyn, Caity Lotz as Stacy, Chris Brown as Rooster and Ivan "Flipz" Velez as Flipz, among a credited cast of 58. It was released in September 2013 by Screen Gems, runs 110 minutes and cost about 20 million US dollars, earning roughly 17 million worldwide, so it did not recover its budget in cinemas. On IMDb it holds 5/10 from about 9,800 votes and on TMDB 6.8/10 from 364 votes, while critics rated it 3.5/10 across 51 reviews.
