The Canyons follows a group of young people in Los Angeles whose lives revolve around the film industry and the relationships they form within it. Christian, a wealthy producer, is involved with Tara, an actress, while also financing a low-budget project. When Ryan, Tara's former partner, is cast in the production, the tensions between the three of them escalate into manipulation and jealousy. The film is a drama-thriller set against the backdrop of Hollywood ambitions and the darker sides of human behaviour.
Paul Schrader directed the film, the fifteenth of the twenty-three features he has made in chronological order, following Adam Resurrected and preceding Venice 70: Future Reloaded. Bret Easton Ellis wrote the screenplay, and Braxton Pope produced. The cast includes Lindsay Lohan as Tara, James Deen as Christian, Nolan Gerard Funk as Ryan, Amanda Brooks as Gina, Tenille Houston as Cynthia, and Gus Van Sant as Dr. Campbell, among forty-one credited cast members.
Released in August 2013, the film runs 99 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 3.8 out of 10 from around 13,000 votes, while on TMDB its rating is 4.4 out of 10 from far fewer votes, roughly 286. A critics' rating of 3.9 out of 10 based on ninety-five reviews places it close to the audience scores on both platforms, indicating a generally unfavourable reception.
