We Live in Time
Short description
Almut and Tobias meet by chance at an unexpected point in both their lives, and the encounter sets their shared story in motion. She is an ambitious chef building her career; he is still recovering from a divorce. Over roughly a decade, the film follows them as they fall in love, make a home together and start a family, until news of a serious illness forces them to reconsider how they want to spend whatever time they have.
John Crowley directed the film, his sixth feature, arriving after The Goldfinch and nine years after Brooklyn. Nick Payne wrote the screenplay. Andrew Garfield plays Tobias and Florence Pugh plays Almut, with Grace Delaney, Lee Braithwaite, Aoife Hinds and Adam James among the supporting cast across thirty credited roles.
Made in the United Kingdom by Film4 Productions, Shoebox Films, StudioCanal and SunnyMarch, with Leah Clarke, Adam Ackland and Guy Heeley producing, the film cost about 20 million dollars and took roughly 59 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7 out of 10 from around 71,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.2 from about 1,400 votes, a smaller and more enthusiastic sample. A critics' rating of 7.1 from 229 reviews sits close to what general audiences gave it.
What's left behind the scenes
- Filming the childbirth scene in a gas station restroom took two days. When filming was completed, Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield, who played the main roles, sat among the set decorations for another quarter of an hour, recovering from the experience.
- During the filming of an intimate scene between Florence Pugh (playing Almuth) and Andrew Garfield (playing Tobias), they became so immersed in their roles and so comfortable with each other that they didn’t hear the call of “Cut!”. When they suddenly realized they were still in character (for longer than intended), they noticed that the equipment had already been almost removed and everyone present was deliberately ignoring them, creating at least the illusion that they were alone together. Garfield later recounted in an interview that thanks to this incident, neither he nor Pugh experienced any awkwardness or embarrassment in subsequent intimate scenes.
- During the filming of the childbirth scene, Florence Pugh, in the role of Almuth, was assisted by midwife Penny Taylor. She also consulted with the main character’s mother and sister, and the sound of labored breathing during childbirth was actually the breathing of the latter (the sister).
