Short description
Paige Morgan is a pre-med student at a Wisconsin university with a clear plan for her future. Eddie, the classmate she meets while working at a local bar, is in fact Prince Edvard of Denmark, who has enrolled under an assumed name to escape the expectations of his parents and the Danish court. The two are drawn to each other despite their very different backgrounds, but his secret cannot stay hidden forever, and once Paige learns who he really is, she must weigh a life as a royal against the medical career she has worked toward.
Martha Coolidge directed the film, which sits between If These Walls Could Talk 2 and Material Girls in a directing career that reaches back to the mid-1970s and includes Valley Girl and Real Genius. The screenplay is by Jack Amiel, Michael Begler and Katherine Fugate, with Mark Amin producing, and the cast is led by Julia Stiles, Luke Mably, Ben Miller, Miranda Richardson and James Fox.
Made for about 22 million dollars, the film took in roughly 37 million worldwide. Critics rated it 5.1 out of 10 across 120 reviews, while audiences were somewhat warmer: on IMDb it holds 5.9 out of 10 from around 44,000 votes, and on TMDB it sits at 6.2 out of 10 from just over a thousand votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- Filming of the movie began on June 16, 2003, in Prague. Initially, the start date of filming was scheduled for March 2003. Filming wrapped up at the end of August of the same year.
- Several months after filming began on "The Prince and Me" (July 2003), on October 8, 2003, a public announcement was made that a real Danish prince was engaged. Crown Prince Frederick and Mary Donaldson, of non-noble birth whom he met in 2000 at the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, set their wedding date for May 14, 2004.
- Amber Tamblyn and Jonathan Jackson auditioned for the lead roles.
- At the beginning of the film, Edward watches Alfred Hitchcock's "To Catch a Thief" starring Cary Grant and Grace Kelly on television. Notably, Grace Kelly met Prince Rainier III of Monaco on the set of "To Catch a Thief" and soon married him – a simple girl, albeit a famous actress, became a princess.
