CBGB is a drama about Hilly Kristal, the man behind the New York club of the same name. In the early 1970s Kristal opens a venue on Manhattan's Lower East Side, intending it as a home for country, bluegrass and blues, the music its initials stand for. Country acts do not come, and the business struggles. Rather than give up, he opens his stage to unknown musicians playing rock and punk, and the club becomes a place where new bands can perform their own songs.
Randall Miller directed the film and wrote the screenplay with Jody Savin; both also produced it with Brad Rosenberger. It is the seventh feature Miller directed, following Class Act, Houseguest, The 6th Man, Marilyn Hotchkiss' Ballroom Dancing & Charm School, Nobel Son and Bottle Shock. Alan Rickman plays Kristal, with Rupert Grint, Malin Åkerman, Johnny Galecki, Stana Katic and Ashley Greene among the credited cast of 49.
The film was released in October 2013 and runs 101 minutes. It was made for about 5 million dollars. On IMDb it holds a critics' rating of 3.4 out of 10 from 44 reviews, while on TMDB its audience rating is 6.4 out of 10 from around 210 votes, a wide gap between the two.
