Short description
Child's Play 2 continues the story of Andy Barclay, the boy who survived the killer doll Chucky in the first film. Andy's mother has been placed in psychiatric care after her account of the doll was rejected by police, and Andy himself is placed with foster parents, Phil and Joanne Simpson. He struggles to settle into his new home, where an older foster child, Kyle, also lives, and he keeps having nightmares about the doll. Meanwhile, the company that makes the Good Guy dolls rebuilds Chucky from the remains recovered after the earlier events, hoping to quiet the bad publicity surrounding the toy. The doll is once again inhabited by the spirit of the killer Charles Lee Ray, and he sets out to find Andy.
The film was directed by John Lafia, who had co-written the original, and written by Don Mancini, with David Kirschner producing. Alex Vincent returns as Andy, Brad Dourif again voices Chucky, and Christine Elise, Jenny Agutter, Gerrit Graham and Grace Zabriskie appear as Kyle, Joanne, Phil and Grace Poole. Released in late 1990, it cost about 13 million dollars and took roughly 36 million worldwide.
Opinion is mixed. On IMDb it holds 6 out of 10 from around 64,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.4 out of 10 from about 2,100 votes, while critics give it 4.7 out of 10 from 16 reviews, a lower figure than either audience score.
What's left behind the scenes
- All of Chucky's lines, spoken in the voice of Brad Dourif, were pre-recorded to synchronize the doll's lip movements with the words. This is why Dourif was an infrequent visitor to the set. His lines were simply played for Alex Vincent, who played Andy.
- Kristine Elise's cinematic debut.
- In early script drafts, Phil and Joanna were named George and Mildred, respectively.
- Chris Sarandon was supposed to return to the screen as Detective Mike Norris, but for financial reasons, all scenes with him were cut from the final version of the film.
- Catherine Hicks, who played Karen in the first "Child's Play" film (Tom Holland, 1988), did not participate in the making of the sequel. However, she was constantly on set with her husband, Kevin Yagher, who operated the Chucky animatronic doll.
- The doll Tommy was named after the director of the first film, Tom Holland.
