Short description

A robbery getaway goes wrong on the New Jersey side of the Hudson River when the fleeing vehicle strikes trucks carrying toxic waste, setting off a blast that seals both ends of the Holland Tunnel. Trapped inside are a dozen survivors facing fire, poisonous fumes and rising water, while authorities outside can only guess at how to reach them. The one person who knows the tunnel well enough to attempt a rescue is Kit Latura, a former head of the city's emergency medical service whose career ended in a tragedy he still carries.

Rob Cohen directed the film, which sits between DragonHeart and The Rat Pack in his filmography. Sylvester Stallone plays Latura, with Amy Brenneman, Viggo Mortensen, Stan Shaw, Barry Newman and Dan Hedaya among the credited cast. Leslie Bohem wrote the screenplay, and John Davis, David T. Friendly and Joseph Singer produced for Universal Pictures and Davis Entertainment.

Released in December 1996, the film cost about 80 million dollars and took in roughly 159 million worldwide, a return that fell short of its budget. On IMDb it holds 6 out of 10 from around 81,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.1 out of 10 from about 1,774 votes, while the critics' score stands at 5.1 out of 10 from 45 reviews, leaving the audience ratings slightly higher than the critical one.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Rob Cohen’s initial choice for the role of Keith Latour was Nicolas Cage, but Universal studio executives felt he was more of a “character actor” and preferred the more commercially successful Sylvester Stallone.
  • One of the early script versions proposed creating a sequel to Ronald Neame's (1911-2010) film 'The Poseidon Adventure' (1972). The plot would have centered on a train with survivors, a mountainside, a train breakdown, and the subsequent deaths of the people. This plot was later reworked into a story about people trapped in a tunnel, which explains the similarity to Neame's film.
  • Filming took place from September 25, 1995, to February 28, 1996.
  • One of the reasons Sylvester Stallone decided to take part in this project was his desire to overcome claustrophobia. He had previously starred in the film 'Cliffhanger' (1993) to overcome his fear of heights.
