Short description
A Cinderella Story is a 2004 romantic comedy that retells the Cinderella fairy tale in a modern American high school. Sam Montgomery lives with her self-centred stepmother Fiona, who runs a diner and keeps Sam working there, and with two stepsisters who treat her more like a servant than family. Sam dreams of going to Princeton. Through anonymous online messages she grows close to a boy she has never met, and they agree to meet at the school's Halloween dance. When she discovers that her correspondent is Austin Ames, the popular quarterback of the school football team, she runs off before midnight, leaving her phone behind. Fearing what he would think if he knew who she really was, she tries to keep her identity hidden while Austin searches for the girl he met.
Mark Rosman directed the film from a screenplay by Leigh Dunlap. It is the fourth of the seven features he has directed, arriving between Life-Size and The Perfect Man. Hilary Duff plays Sam and Chad Michael Murray plays Austin; Jennifer Coolidge, Dan Byrd, Regina King and Julie Gonzalo appear in supporting roles. The film was made for about 19 million US dollars and took about 70 million US dollars worldwide.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6 out of 10 from around 101,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.6 out of 10 from roughly 3,400 votes. A film critics' rating of 3.9 out of 10 from 102 reviews puts it well below the audience scores.
