Prince Avalanche
Short description
In the summer of 1988, two road workers are sent to repaint the lane markings along a long rural highway running through a forest that has been scorched by wildfire. Alvin, the older and more serious of the two, takes the job seriously and finds a kind of peace in the isolation, passing the time writing letters to his girlfriend back in the city. Lance, his younger co-worker and the brother of Alvin's girlfriend, is restless in the empty landscape and misses parties, girls and city life. Over the course of the season the two men work, wander, argue and reconcile, and their only encounter with another person comes in the form of a truck driver who appears briefly and then vanishes again.
David Gordon Green directed and wrote the screenplay; the film is the fifth of the fourteen features he has directed, following The Sitter and preceding Joe. Paul Rudd plays Alvin and Emile Hirsch plays Lance, with Lance LeGault as the truck driver. It was produced by James Belfer, David Gordon Green and Lisa Muskat, and runs 94 minutes.
The film is a comedy-drama set in the United States. On IMDb it holds a critics' rating of 6.9/10 from 124 reviews, while on TMDB its audience rating stands at 6.1/10 from 344 votes, a gap that suggests critics responded to it more warmly than general viewers did.
What's left behind the scenes
- At the end of the film, when Alvin speaks to the old woman in German, the subtitles translate his phrase as “Would you like to join us on our adventure?” In reality, he says “Willst Du bei unserer Lawine mitmachen?”, which translates as “Do you want to join our avalanche?”
- The film was shot in just 16 days.
- Lance lights a cigarette with a BIC lighter that has a childproof cap. This feature didn't exist in 1988.
- The vehicle inspection sticker on the truck indicates the year 2011, although the events of the film take place in 1988.
- At the beginning of the film, Alvin (Paul Rudd) finds himself among the charred remains of a house and discovers an elderly woman in a pink hat. This woman is played by Joyce Payne, who had no prior acting experience before this film, and she is sorting through the actual remains of her old home. Having already passed the midpoint of filming, David Gordon Green met Joyce Payne, a local resident who had lost her home and all her possessions in a fire. Her story captivated the director so much that he immediately made the woman one of the four main characters of the film.
- The film was shot in complete secrecy and isolation, with filming taking place in a national park recovering from wildfires, with a crew of only about fifteen people.
- So much lane marking would require a lot of paint. But the characters only have one barrel, which is shown in the scene where Lance paints his shoes.
