Short description
A successful businesswoman, Lindsey Meeks, falls for Ben Wrightman, a high school teacher who is charming and good with children. The two begin a relationship that seems to work well through the winter. When baseball season returns, Lindsey discovers that Ben is a devoted fan of the Boston Red Sox, and his commitment to the team becomes a rival for his attention. She must decide whether the relationship can survive his obsession.
The film is a romantic comedy directed by Bobby Farrelly and Peter Farrelly, their seventh and eighth directed features in chronological order, following Stuck on You and preceding The Heartbreak Kid. Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel wrote the screenplay, and Drew Barrymore and Nancy Juvonen produced. Barrymore stars as Lindsey, with Jimmy Fallon as Ben. The credited cast numbers 105, with 54 crew members. It was made for about 30 million dollars and took in roughly 50 million worldwide.
On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 6.2 from around 50,000 votes, and on TMDB it also rates 6.2, from 776 votes. A critics' rating of 6.4 from 194 reviews places it slightly above the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- One scene from the film was shot during a game between the Boston Red Sox and the Texas Rangers (September 4, 2004). Unfortunately, the Boston team (around which the events of the film unfold) lost that game 6-8.
- This ended the Red Sox's 10-game winning streak, and the press subsequently blamed the film crew, believing they had distracted the players.
- The next time the film crew went to a game was on September 16, 2004. The Boston team managed to win this game against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 11-4. On that day, Drew Barrymore's character runs across the entire field to the stands where Jimmy Fallon is located. This scene was filmed after the game. The remaining people in the stands accordingly acted as extras.
- The final scene was filmed on October 27, 2004, at the game between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Boston Red Sox. During the celebration of another success by the Boston players on the field, the main characters of the film ran out to join the players' joy.
- 17 participants of the Boston Baseball League were selected to play the roles of bench players.
- The warm jacket worn by Barrymore's character throughout the film became incredibly popular among fans of the Boston team a week before the film's premiere. There were huge lines in stores, and almost the entire batch that arrived on the market was sold out within a week.
