The residents of Santa María del Mar, a struggling fishing community, face economic decline following the end of industrialization. Their fortunes could improve if a fish packing company establishes itself in the village, but the company requires the town to have a resident doctor first. Led by Germán, the locals attempt to trick a city physician named Mateo into moving to the island. To make the town seem appealing, the community pretends to share Mateo's specific interests in Indian cuisine and American football.
Directed by Celso R. García, this Mexican comedy, drama, and romance is the third film in his career, following The Thin Yellow Line and My Best Friend's Wedding. The screenplay was written by García and Luciana Herrera Caso, with production by Pimienta Films and Cuadernos de Cine. The cast features Guillermo Villegas and Memo Villegas as Germán, Pierre Louis as Mateo, and Yalitza Aparicio as Ana, alongside Eligio Meléndez and Julio Casado.
The film has a runtime of 95 minutes. Audience reception is generally positive, with a rating of 6.5/10 on IMDb based on 1,800 votes and a score of 6.7/10 on TMDB from 110 votes.
