Appleseed

In the aftermath of a global war that has left most of the world in ruins, the soldier Deunan Knute is taken from the wastelands to Olympus, a city that presents itself as a haven of order and prosperity. There she is reunited with Briareos, her former partner, whose body was destroyed in combat and replaced with a cybernetic one. Olympus is home to both humans and bioroids, genetically engineered beings designed to suppress the aggression and instability that nearly ended humanity, and the two populations live side by side under a governing council and a central intelligence. As Deunan settles into the city, she begins to question whether its harmony is genuine and what the authorities intend for the people outside its walls.

The film is an adaptation of Masamune Shirow's manga and was directed by Shinji Aramaki, appearing second in the chronological list of his features after Metal Skin Panic MADOX-01. Haruka Handa and Tsutomu Kamishiro wrote the screenplay, and Ai Kobayashi voices Deunan, with Asumi Miwa credited as motion actor, Jurota Kosugi as Briareos and Yuki Matsuoka as Hitomi.

Released in 2004, the film had a budget of around 10 million dollars but returned roughly 1 million at the worldwide box office. On IMDb it holds 6.9/10 from about 19,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.7/10 from 411 votes; critics were less favourable, giving 4.8/10 across 31 reviews, so audiences responded more warmly than reviewers did.
