Short description
Peter Strickland wrote and directed Berberian Sound Studio, a British drama with horror and thriller elements. In the 1970s, a shy British sound engineer named Gilderoy travels to Italy to work on the audio for a horror production. He arrives expecting routine work and finds himself at a studio turning out giallo films, a violent strain of Italian cinema he has no experience with. Surrounded by people he does not understand, he throws himself into his task, and the sounds and images around him begin to unsettle his grip on his own past.
The film stars Toby Jones as Gilderoy, with Tonia Sotiropoulou, Cosimo Fusco, Hilda Péter, Layla Amir and Eugenia Caruso. It was produced by Keith Griffiths and Mary Burke for Film4 Productions, Warp X and Illuminations Films, and runs 92 minutes. It was Strickland's first feature and the earliest of the four titles listed for him in chronological order, preceding The Duke of Burgundy (2015), In Fabric (2018) and The Thing (2018).
On IMDb it holds 6.2/10 from around 18,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.1/10 from roughly 400 votes, while a critics' rating of 7.2/10 from 94 reviews places it noticeably higher among reviewers than among general audiences.
What's left behind the scenes
- The recording studio featured in the film was named by the director in honor of American singer of Armenian descent, Cathy Berberian.
- At the very beginning of the film, Elena calls Francesco to inform him of Gilderoy's arrival at the studio. Despite the film taking place in Italy, when she picks up the phone, a continuous ringing tone, typical of the USA or the UK, is heard. The phone ringing tone in Italy sounds completely different.
