The Adventures of Pluto Nash
Short description
Set on the Moon in 2087, The Adventures of Pluto Nash follows a nightclub owner who has built the most popular venue in the lunar colonies. When a local gangster, Mogan, pressures him to hand over the club as part of a wider scheme to control the Moon, Pluto refuses and is forced to go on the run. He is helped by his robot bodyguard Bruno, an aspiring singer named Dina Lake, and a small circle of allies.
The film was directed by Ron Underwood, the sixth of the eight features listed for him, arriving between Mighty Joe Young and Santa Baby. Neil Cuthbert wrote the screenplay, and Martin Bregman, Michael Bregman and Louis A. Stroller produced. Eddie Murphy plays Pluto, with Randy Quaid, Rosario Dawson, Joe Pantoliano, Jay Mohr and Luis Guzmán among the cast.
Released in August 2002, the film cost about 100 million USD and returned roughly 7 million USD worldwide, a large gap between spending and receipts. On IMDb it holds 3.9/10 from around 28,000 votes, and on TMDB 4.4/10 from 558 votes. A critics' rating of 3.2/10 from 88 reviews places it below even the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Halle Berry and Jennifer Lopez were considered for the role of Dina Lake. After their refusals, Rosario Dawson was cast in the role.
- The film sat on the shelf for about two years. The main work on it was completed in the fall of 2000, and the premiere was scheduled for April 6, 2001. But then, due to a confluence of circumstances, the premiere was first postponed to August 2001, and then cancelled altogether. The long-suffering film, with a very substantial budget for that time (100,000,000), was only released in the summer of 2002, where it suffered a disastrous failure.
- DVD sales in the US grossed approximately $25 million.
- Alec Baldwin disliked this film so much that he demanded his name be removed from the credits.
- Eddie Murphy refused to promote the film upon its release, and stated that money was the only reason he agreed to the role.
