The Sweetest Thing

Christina Walters is a single woman in San Francisco who, after years of keeping romance at arm's length, meets a man named Peter while out at a nightclub with her friends. Just as she decides to lower her guard, Peter leaves town. With her best friend Courtney along for the ride, Christina sets off to find him, and the trip brings a series of complications.

The 2002 comedy was directed by Roger Kumble, his third feature after Cruel Intentions and Cruel Intentions 2, from a screenplay by Nancy M. Pimental and produced by Cathy Konrad. Cameron Diaz plays Christina, with Christina Applegate as Courtney, Thomas Jane as Peter, Selma Blair as Jane, and supporting turns from Jason Bateman and Parker Posey. The production cost about 43 million dollars and took in roughly 69 million dollars worldwide, a modest return.

Audience scores are low: on IMDb the film holds 5.2 out of 10 from more than sixty-one thousand votes, and on TMDB 5.6 out of 10 from over twelve hundred. A critics' rating of 4.3 out of 10 from 111 reviews places it below even those viewer figures, making the film one that drew little enthusiasm from either side.
