The Flower and the Angry Waves

A young member of a yakuza clan falls in love with the woman intended to marry his boss. He kidnaps her shortly before the wedding, and the two flee to Tokyo to start a quiet life. To maintain their cover, the man finds employment as a laborer while the woman works as a waitress in a restaurant, though they remain hunted by their former associates.

Directed by Seijun Suzuki, this film was released in 1964 as the 17th of 26 films he directed. It followed Gate of Flesh and preceded The Call of Blood in his chronological body of work. Produced by Nikkatsu Corporation, the movie features a screenplay written by Takeo Kimura, Keiichi Abe, and Kazuo Funahashi. The main cast includes Shōki Fukae in the role of Sakurada, Chieko Misaki as Yachiyo, and Eimei Esumi as Gorosuke.
