Lore

Set in the final days of the Second World War, Lore follows five German children whose parents, committed Nazis, are taken into custody by Allied forces. The eldest, fourteen-year-old Lore, takes charge of her younger siblings and leads them north across a devastated country toward their grandmother's home. The journey is long and punishing, and the children must contend with hunger and cold as they pass through occupied territory. Along the way they meet Thomas, a young Jewish refugee, and Lore's inherited beliefs begin to conflict with what she experiences. The film is adapted from Rachel Seiffert's novel "The Dark Room".

Cate Shortland directed and co-wrote the film with Robin Mukherjee; Liz Watts, Karsten Stöter and Paul Welsh produced it. It is her second feature, following Somersault (2004) and preceding Berlin Syndrome (2017) and Black Widow (2021). Saskia Rosendahl plays Lore, with Kai-Peter Malina as Thomas, Nele Trebs as Liesel, Ursina Lardi and Hans-Jochen Wagner as the parents, and Mika Seidel as Jürgen. Twenty-one cast members and forty-six crew members are credited.

Produced across Germany, Australia and the United Kingdom, the film had a budget of four million dollars and took about two million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.1 from roughly sixteen thousand votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.7 from a few hundred votes. A critics' rating of 7.7 from 115 reviews is higher than both audience scores.
