Thomas Craven is a veteran homicide detective in Boston and a widowed father. When his adult daughter Emma is shot dead outside his home, the authorities assume he was the intended target. Craven doubts that explanation and begins looking into her life on his own, learning that she had uncovered damaging information about Northmoor, the company where she worked. His private inquiry draws the attention of people determined to keep that information buried, among them a government operative named Darius Jedburgh.
Martin Campbell directed the film, the eleventh of the eighteen features he has made in chronological order, following Casino Royale and preceding Green Lantern. William Monahan and Andrew Bovell wrote the screenplay, and Graham King, Tim Headington and Michael Wearing produced. Mel Gibson plays Craven, with Ray Winstone as Jedburgh, Danny Huston as Jack Bennett, Bojana Novaković as Emma Craven, Shawn Roberts as Burnham and David Aaron Baker as Millroy. Forty actors and 109 crew members are credited.
The production had a budget of 80 million US dollars and took in about 81 million worldwide, a result that left it roughly at the level of its cost. On IMDb it holds 6.6 out of 10 from 103,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.5 out of 10 from 1,804 votes. A critics' rating of 5.9 out of 10 from 215 reviews places it close to the two audience scores, which sit only slightly higher.
