The Thieves

The Thieves is a 2012 action crime film about a group of South Korean thieves who travel to Macau to pull off a major heist. They join forces with a crew from Hong Kong, and the job is put together by a figure from the past, whose reappearance brings old grievances with him. The target is a valuable diamond kept in a heavily guarded casino. As the plan moves forward, the police draw closer, and the members of the two crews each have their own intentions regarding the prize, so trust between them does not hold.

Choi Dong-hoon directed and co-wrote the film with Lee Ki-cheol. It is his third feature, following Tazza: The High Rollers in 2006 and Woochi: The Demon Slayer in 2009, and it came before Assassination in 2015 and the two Alienoid films. The cast includes Kim Yoon-seok, Kim Hye-soo, Lee Jung-jae, Jun Ji-hyun, Simon Yam and Kim Hae-sook.

Released on 25 July 2012, the film runs 135 minutes and was made across several countries, including Korea, Hong Kong and Japan. It took about 84 million US dollars worldwide, a strong return for a Korean production of its kind. On IMDb it holds 6.8 out of 10 from over eleven thousand votes, and on TMDB it also stands at 6.8 from a much smaller number of votes. A critics' rating of 6.9 from fourteen reviews places it narrowly ahead of both audience scores.
