Short description

Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie follows the martial artists Ryu, a wanderer who drifts from place to place, and Ken Masters, his former training partner and now an American champion. The criminal organization Shadowlaw, led by the ruthless Bison, is hunting the world's strongest fighters to bend them to its purposes, and when it cannot track Ryu down, it uses Ken to reach him. Meanwhile, Major Guile of the United States Army and Chun-Li join forces to try to stop Bison's international operations. The film adapts the Street Fighter II video game.

Gisaburō Sugii directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Kenichi Imai, working from a story by Capcom's team. It was Sugii's fourth film as director, following Nine, Night on the Galactic Railroad and The Tale of Genji. The voice cast includes Koujiro Shimizu as Ryu, Kenji Haga as Ken, Miki Fujitani as Chun-Li, Masane Tsukayama as Guile and Takeshi Kusaka as Bison.

Made on a budget of about 6 million dollars, the film took roughly 29 million dollars worldwide, a return several times its cost. On TMDB it holds a rating of 7.1 out of 10 from 332 votes, suggesting a modest but broadly positive response from viewers.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The animated film is based on the 'Street Fighter' series of computer games (1987 – present, Capcom).
  • In the German, Italian, and French dubs, the track 'Overcome' is used instead of 'In the Nursery' by Tricky.
  • The film mentions a US presidential candidate named Ed Pressman. This is a reference to Edward R. Pressman, the producer of "Street Fighter" (1994) starring Jean-Claude Van Damme.
