Soul Plane is a 2004 comedy about Nashawn Wade, a man who survives a disastrous flight in which his dog is killed. He sues the airline and wins a large settlement, then uses the money to launch his own carrier, NWA, designed to serve African-American passengers with music, dancing and a party atmosphere in the cabin. The airline's first flight runs into trouble when a white family, the Hunkees, ends up on board by mistake, and the clash between the two groups drives much of the film. Snoop Dogg plays the pilot, Captain Mack, while Method Man, K.D. Aubert and Godfrey appear among the crew and passengers.
Jessy Terrero directed the film, his first feature, from a screenplay by Chuck Wilson and Bo Zenga; he also served as a producer. Terrero went on to direct Gun in 2010 and Freelancers in 2012. Kevin Hart leads the cast as Nashawn, with Tom Arnold as the family patriarch. The credited cast runs to 73 names.
Produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Turbo Productions on a budget of about 16 million dollars, the film earned roughly 15 million dollars worldwide, less than it cost. On IMDb it holds a rating of 4.6 from around 26,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.5 from about 520 votes. A critics' rating of 4 out of 10 across 98 reviews places it below even the modest audience scores.
