Charlotte Gray

Charlotte Gray is a young Scottish woman who becomes an operative for the British government after falling for an RAF pilot. When his plane goes down over occupied France, she is sent into the country on a mission, but her real aim is to find him. There she joins a Resistance group led by Julien Levade, and her work alongside its members gradually shifts her loyalties and her feelings. The film is based on Sebastian Faulks's novel and is set during the German occupation of France in the Second World War.

Gillian Armstrong directed, working from a screenplay by Jeremy Brock. It is the sixth of the seven features listed for Armstrong, arriving between Little Women and Death Defying Acts. Cate Blanchett plays the title role, with Billy Crudup as Julien, Michael Gambon as the older Levade, Rupert Penry-Jones as Peter and Anton Lesser among a credited cast of 25. The production was a large undertaking for this kind of period drama, made by Warner Bros. Pictures, Film4 Productions, Ecosse Films and Senator Film for a budget of 27 million dollars.

Its commercial performance fell well short of that outlay, with worldwide takings of about 5 million dollars. Audience responses have been mild rather than enthusiastic: on IMDb it holds 6.4 out of 10 from roughly 14,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.1 from a much smaller base of 193 votes. Reviewers were less positive still, with the critics' rating of 5.1 from 88 reviews sitting below both audience scores.
