Ivy and Theo appear to be a perfect couple with successful careers and a happy family. However, their stable image masks deep-seated resentment and competition. This tension reaches a breaking point when Theo's professional life collapses just as Ivy's ambitions lead to greater success, turning their partnership into a rivalry.

What's left behind the scenes
- When devising careers for Ivy and Theo (played by Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch, respectively), screenwriter Tony McNamara made Ivy a chef because he once worked in a restaurant himself.
- The house shown in the film was conceived by the artist who painted the picture, Mark Ricker, but was assembled in a film studio.
- In the scene where the characters throw oranges at each other, sponges painted to resemble oranges were used, and the Italian chandelier was made of caramelized sugar.
