Life seems easy for picture-perfect couple Ivy and Theo: successful careers, a loving marriage, great kids. But beneath the façade of their supposed ideal life, a storm is brewing – as Theo's career nosedives while Ivy's own ambitions take off, a tinderbox of fierce competition and hidden resentment ignites.
What's left behind the scenes
- When devising careers for Ivy and Theo (played by Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch, respectively), screenwriter Tony McNamara made Ivy a chef because he once worked in a restaurant himself.
- The house shown in the film was conceived by the artist who painted the picture, Mark Ricker, but was assembled in a film studio.
- In the scene where the characters throw oranges at each other, sponges painted to resemble oranges were used, and the Italian chandelier was made of caramelized sugar.
- The characters in the film constantly drink Negronis (an aperitif cocktail based on gin and vermouth). According to Benedict Cumberbatch, the idea for the film first began to be considered during the 2018 Venice Film Festival, and "they are constantly drinking Negronis in the film because we drank a lot of it in Venice."
