Mr. Bean's Holiday
Short description
Mr. Bean wins a holiday to the south of France along with a new video camera, and his trip from London quickly turns into its usual trail of mishaps. At a Paris station he asks a fellow traveller to film him boarding the train to Cannes; the man turns out to be a Russian film director on his way to serve on the Cannes Film Festival jury, and in the confusion the director is left behind while his ten-year-old son ends up on the train with Mr. Bean. Since neither speaks the other's language, the two set off together across France, and the boy's father tries to find him again. Their journey eventually leads to Cannes and its festival.
The film is a comedy directed by Steve Bendelack, written by Robin Driscoll and Hamish McColl, and produced by Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner and Peter Bennett-Jones. Rowan Atkinson returns as Mr. Bean, a role he had played on television and in an earlier feature. Willem Dafoe plays Carson Clay, Maxim Baldry plays the boy Stepan, Karel Roden plays his father Emil, Emma de Caunes plays Sabine, and Steve Pemberton plays the Vicar. It runs 90 minutes and was made for about 25 million USD, taking roughly 232 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.4/10 from 142,000 votes and on TMDB 6.4/10 from 3,220 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 5.4/10 from 113 reviews, so audiences rated it somewhat higher than critics did.
What's left behind the scenes
- Long before the film's release, Rowan Atkinson announced that "Mr. Bean's Holiday" would be his last appearance as the character.
- The official premiere of the film in the UK took place on March 25th at the Odeon cinema in Leicester Square, London. All proceeds from it went to the British charities Comic Relief and Oxford Children's Hospital Appeal.
- Originally, the film's creators intended for Mr. Bean to travel to Australia, not France.
- The girl who plays the cassette recorder before the lottery winners are announced (Lily at the stereo) is Lily Atkinson, the daughter of Rowan Atkinson.
- In one of the shots where Mr. Bean's passport is visible, you can make out his name – Rowan, just like the actor's.
- In the scene where Sabine, played by Emma de Caunes, falls asleep in the car and then begins to snore, the snoring is the actress's real snoring. She asked director Steve Bendelack to make her look as believable as possible, and also to give her something to help her fall asleep. She was given a sleeping pill and promised that everything would be realistic. The actress herself was unaware that she snored in her sleep and was very embarrassed to see the resulting scene.
