Short description

Practical Magic 2 follows the Owens family as they struggle to break a centuries-old curse that has historically prevented the women in their lineage from finding love. The plot centers on the daughters and sisters of the family, including Sally and Gillian, who must unite to confront ancestral secrets and dark magic. The story involves a journey to Great Britain to face the source of their powers and protect the younger generation, specifically Sally's daughter, Kylie, who is discovering her own supernatural abilities.

Directed by Susanne Bier, this film is the ninth project in her directorial timeline, following her 2018 film Bird Box. The movie stars Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, both of whom also served as producers. The cast includes Joey King, Maisie Williams, Xolo Maridueña, and Lee Pace, with a total of 38 credited performers. Produced in the United States by companies including Warner Bros. Pictures and Fortis Films, the production had a budget of 75 million USD. Since its release, it has earned 46 million USD at the worldwide box office, indicating it did not recover its production costs. On TMDB, the film holds a rating of 6.2/10 based on 80 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • According to the film's director, Susanne Bier, she decided not to cast Evan Rachel Wood as Kylie because the character has just graduated from college; therefore, the role went to Joey King. Additionally, Maisie Williams played Antonia instead of Alexandra Artrip, as Artrip had left the acting profession back in 1998.
  • The filmmakers could have used Nicole Kidman's wigs from Griffin Dunne's 1998 film "Practical Magic," but they deliberately chose not to in order to slightly alter the appearance of her character, Gillian.
  • The film was shot against the backdrop of Coupeville on Whidbey Island, Washington, where the first film in the franchise (Griffin Dunne, 1998) was once filmed. The city administration did not allow the sequel to be filmed directly within city limits because the filming period coincided with the tourist season. Filming in the city would have been possible if the filmmakers had agreed to all the conditions set by the city authorities, but the creative team rejected these requirements.
