Short description
After the events of the Quarter Quell, Katniss Everdeen is taken to District 13, the underground stronghold that has secretly survived outside the Capitol's control. There she is asked to become the face of the growing rebellion, even as she struggles with what that role demands of her and worries about Peeta, who was not rescued and is now used by the Capitol in its own broadcasts. The story follows her attempts to find a way forward amid fragile alliances and a conflict moving toward open war.
Francis Lawrence directed the film, his second entry in the series after Catching Fire. The screenplay is by Danny Strong and Peter Craig, and Jon Kilik and Nina Jacobson produced. Jennifer Lawrence returns as Katniss, joined by Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks and Julianne Moore, with 50 credited cast members and 206 credited crew.
Released in November 2014, the film cost about 125 million dollars and took roughly 755 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.6/10 from 543,000 votes and on TMDB 6.8/10 from 17,012 votes, while a film critics' rating stands at 6.4/10 from 301 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- Philip Seymour Hoffman, who played Plutarch Heavensbee, tragically died a week before filming ended. Since most of his scenes for the two final films had already been shot, they decided not to recast the role and finished working on it by making some changes to the script.
- Julianne Moore said she was persuaded to take on the role of Alma Coin by her own children, who really like the original novel.
