Major Samar Anand serves in the Indian army as a bomb disposal expert, and his apparent disregard for his own safety earns him a reputation among those around him. When he rescues a drowning journalist, Akira Rai, she ends up with his jacket and finds a diary inside that recounts his earlier life. That story begins in London, where Samar worked as a struggling musician and fell in love with Meera Thapar. A promise made under extreme circumstances tore them apart and set him on the path that led to the army.
The film stars Shah Rukh Khan as Samar, Katrina Kaif as Meera and Anushka Sharma as Akira. Yash Chopra directed it from a screenplay by Aditya Chopra and Devika Bhagat, with Aditya Chopra producing. It was the fourth of the four films in the director's listed body of work, following Silsila, Darr and Veer-Zaara.
Jab Tak Hai Jaan was released in November 2012 and runs 176 minutes. Made on a budget of about 6 million US dollars, it took roughly 28 million dollars worldwide, a large return on its cost. On TMDB it holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from around 300 votes. A film critics' rating of 6 out of 10 from 21 reviews sits below the audience score, indicating critics were more reserved than viewers.
