A family is found murdered in a house in a Stockholm suburb, and the only surviving member is a teenage son, badly wounded and unable to speak about what he saw. Rather than a single killing, the attack appears to be an attempt to wipe out the whole family, and a detective leading the case learns there is another child who was not home at the time. To find her before the killer does, he needs the boy to talk. That leads him to a doctor who once swore never to practise hypnosis again, and who agrees to break that promise to reach the witness's buried memories. The film is a Swedish crime thriller adapted from a novel by the writing duo Lars Kepler.
Lasse Hallström directed; in a career of twenty features this is the fourteenth, following Salmon Fishing in the Yemen and preceding Safe Haven. Tobias Zilliacus plays the detective Joona Linna, Mikael Persbrandt plays Erik Maria Bark, and Lena Olin plays Simone Bark, alongside Helena af Sandeberg, Jonatan Bökman and Oscar Pettersson among a cast of twenty-two.
