Short description

Win a Date with Tad Hamilton! is a romantic comedy about Rosalee Futch, a young woman working in a small West Virginia town whose long-standing wish is to meet Tad Hamilton, a Hollywood actor she admires. A contest gives her exactly that: a date with the star in Los Angeles. The meeting goes better than either of them expects, and Tad takes a genuine interest in her. That leaves Pete, her best friend and co-worker, who has quietly been in love with her for years, watching a love triangle take shape around the woman he never told how he felt. Kate Bosworth plays Rosalee, Josh Duhamel plays Tad, and Topher Grace plays Pete; Nathan Lane and Sean Hayes appear as two men both named Richard Levy, with Gary Cole as Rosalee's father.

The film was directed by Robert Luketic, following his 2001 debut Legally Blonde and before Monster-in-Law, 21, The Ugly Truth, Killers, Paranoia and The Wedding Year. Victor Levin wrote the screenplay, and Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher produced it for DreamWorks Pictures. It runs 95 minutes.

Released in January 2004, the film cost about 22 million dollars and took in roughly 21 million worldwide, so it did not recover its budget at the box office. On IMDb it holds 5.6 out of 10 from about 31,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.7 out of 10 from 523 votes. A critics' rating of 5.9 out of 10 from 148 reviews places it slightly above both audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The location where the plot begins is situated west of Charleston in Putnam County, West Virginia, but filming took place in Fayette County, east of Charleston.
  • Kate Bosworth, who played Rosalie, has heterochromia (different colored irises in the right and left eyes, or uneven coloration of different areas of the iris in one eye). Her right eye is brown, and her left eye is blue. This is noticeable in many scenes. However, in some scenes (for example, in the bedroom where Pete kisses her for the first time), the actress is shown with both eyes blue. Apparently, the director instructed her to wear contact lenses.
