Ben Carson was a New York City police detective until a shooting that killed a fellow officer ended his career. The accident cost him his marriage and drove him to drink, and he now sleeps on his sister's couch in Queens. Unable to return to his old life or reconnect with his estranged wife and children, he takes a job as a night watchman at the Mayflower, a grand department store left in ruins by a fire. Patrolling the burnt-out building, Ben notices disturbing handprints on the large mirrors that survived the flames, and it becomes clear that something behind the glass is reaching out toward him and the family he no longer lives with.

Alexandre Aja directed the film and co-wrote the screenplay with Grégory Levasseur. It was Aja's third feature, following High Tension and The Hills Have Eyes, and it preceded Piranha 3D, Horns and Crawl in his filmography. Kiefer Sutherland plays Ben, with Paula Patton as his wife Amy, Amy Smart as his sister Angela, Jason Flemyng as Larry Byrne, and Cameron Boyce and Erica Gluck as the couple's children. Around thirty actors and sixty crew members are credited.

The film was made for about 35 million dollars and took in roughly 77 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds a 6.1 from around 119,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.3 from a much smaller base of just over two thousand. A critics' score of 3.9 from 88 reviews places it well below the audience figures on both sites, suggesting viewers were more tolerant of it than reviewers.
