Short description
Joe Kingman is a professional American football player at the height of his career. Wealthy, famous and used to living exactly as he pleases, he is focused on leading his Boston team to a championship. His routine is upended when a young girl arrives at his door and claims to be his daughter, the child of a past relationship. As he deals with the demands of his sport and his social life, he has to adjust to looking after a child, and the two gradually build a relationship.
The film was directed by Andy Fickman, its third feature after Who's Your Daddy? and She's the Man, and was written by Nichole Millard and Kathryn Price. Dwayne Johnson plays Joe, with Madison Pettis as Peyton, Kyra Sedgwick as his agent Stella Peck, Roselyn Sánchez as Monique Vasquez, Morris Chestnut as teammate Travis Sanders and Hayes MacArthur as Kyle Cooper, among a credited cast of 59.
Released in September 2007 by Walt Disney Pictures, the comedy cost about 22 million dollars and took roughly 148 million dollars worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 6.2 out of 10 from about 103,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.5 from around 2,250 votes. A critics' rating of 4.7 out of 10 from 100 reviews places it below both audience scores, which are close to each other and indicate generally mild approval.
What's left behind the scenes
- The film's production was delayed for several months when Dwayne Johnson suffered a serious Achilles tendon injury during football practice.
- Before the film's release, Dwayne Johnson stated that this would be the last time he would be credited as “The Rock”.
- According to the original script, the main character was supposed to play for the real-life National Football League team, the New England Patriots, but negotiations with them proved too difficult for the producers. This idea had to be abandoned, and the film featured a completely fictional football team.
