The Lego Movie
Short description
The Lego Movie centres on Emmet Brickowski, an ordinary construction worker in a city built entirely from Lego bricks, who follows instructions, listens to the same song on television and fits in without standing out. After he stumbles upon a rare piece, a group of rebels mistakes him for the prophesied MasterBuilder, the only figure who can stop the tyrant Lord Business from freezing the universe into permanent order with a weapon called the Kragle. Emmet is swept into a quest alongside the determined Wyldstyle, the blind mystic Vitruvius, Batman and a crew of mismatched allies, even as he insists he is nothing special.
Phil Lord and Christopher Miller directed and wrote the film, their third feature together after Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and 21 Jump Street, and the same year they released 22 Jump Street. Chris Pratt voices Emmet, with Elizabeth Banks as Wyldstyle, Will Ferrell as Lord Business, Morgan Freeman as Vitruvius, Will Arnett as Batman and Liam Neeson as Bad Cop. It was produced by Warner Bros. Pictures Animation with Animal Logic, RatPac Entertainment and Village Roadshow Pictures.
Made for about 60 million dollars, the film took roughly 468 million dollars worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 7.7 out of 10 from over 413,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.4 from a much smaller base of voters. A critics' rating of 8.2 from 259 reviews places it above both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- This is Morgan Freeman's first animated film.
- The film character Benny (the astronaut) is a boy from the 1980s. His figure looks as if it has been played with by several generations of children. This is noticeable in the worn logo and broken helmet. Moreover, the crack in the helmet is in the place where real Lego figures typically broke.
- Lord Business is the president of Octan, a fictional gas station that first appeared in 1992 and has since been repeatedly featured in various Lego sets.
- The creators intentionally tried to film in the style of stop-motion, and also to make the special effects not look too obvious. All this was done to make everything on screen look like it was made with real Lego.
- The staff of the wizard Vitruvius is actually a lollipop stick.
- Vitruvius was the name of a Roman architect who lived in the 1st century BC.
- The numbers that can be seen on the bricks are the official Lego element identifiers (Lego Element ID).
- Lord Business's special cape is actually shaped like a giant tie.
- In 2012, the following cast was considered: Emmet - Robert Downey Jr., Wyldstyle - Emma Stone, Vitruvius - Nicolas Cage, Batman - Christopher Lee, Benny - Sacha Baron Cohen, Metal Beard - Stephen Root.
- Emmet is the only right-handed builder; the rest are left-handed.
- Emmet drives a modified small car 3177 from Lego City's 2010 line. It differs only in its curved front bumper and mirrors. This model was eventually released as a promotional set called "Emmet's Car" or "Fly Car".
- Aristophanes' comedy "The Birds" tells of a bird city between heaven and earth, where everything is perfect. The film features a similar city, the birthplace of Unikitty, where there are no rules or restrictions.
- This is the second time Will Forte has voiced Abraham Lincoln. The first time was in the series "Clone High" (2002–2003).
- The "Wilhelm scream" can be heard during the motorcycle chase scene when Lucy throws the biker off.
- Real Lego sets were used during filming, specifically director Christopher Miller's personal "Space Village" set.
- The music Vitruvius plays on the piano when Lucy and Emmet enter the saloon is a ragtime version of "Everything Is Awesome," which is the film's main musical theme.
- When Wildstyle rescues Emmet, she extends her hand to him and says, "Come with me if you want to live." This is a reference to the Terminator film series.
- Modified posters for the film "21 Jump Street" (2012) with the titles "Teen Copz: The Movie" and "Macho and the Nerd" hang in Emmet's apartment.
- One of the Master Builders is named El Macho Wrestler. This is the name of the main antagonist in "Despicable Me 2" (2013).
- In the bar in Old West, you can spot the main bandit from the movie "The Lone Ranger" (2013).
- When Emmet jumps into the chasm near Lord Business's tower and then finds himself in the real world, he actually goes through a pipe labeled "Magic Portal." This is a nod to The Magic Portal, the very first Lego stop-motion animated film.
- When Wonder Woman is handcuffed, like the other Master Builders, she is the least pleased about it. According to early Wonder Woman comics, if a man puts handcuffs on her or ties her up, she loses all her power.
- Batman’s line about Emmet being the hero Lucy deserves is a reference to Commissioner Gordon’s final speech in "The Dark Knight" (2008).
- When entering the 'dog,' the Green Ninja peeked out from around the corner four times on the left.
