Bottle Shock

In 1976, a British wine merchant living in Paris grows frustrated with France's grip on the wine world. He travels to California's Napa Valley, where he samples local wines and finds quality he did not expect. Convinced the French are overlooking something, he organizes a blind tasting in Paris that pits California wines against prestigious French labels. Meanwhile, Jim Barrett and his son Bo struggle to keep their small Napa winery going, with Jim staking everything on producing a chardonnay he believes can stand with the best. The film is based on the events surrounding the 1976 Judgment of Paris, and Alan Rickman plays the merchant, Steven Spurrier, with Chris Pine as Bo Barrett, Bill Pullman as Jim Barrett, and Freddy Rodríguez as Gustavo Brambila.

Randall Miller directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Jody Savin and Ross Schwartz. It was Miller's seventh feature, arriving after Nobel Son in 2007 and before CBGB in 2013, and he also produced it. The film had a budget of 5 million USD and took in about the same amount worldwide, a modest result.
