Justice League
Short description
Justice League follows Bruce Wayne as he seeks out Diana Prince after Superman's sacrifice restores his belief in humanity. Together they work to recruit a team of metahumans — Barry Allen, Arthur Curry and Victor Stone — to confront Steppenwolf and his army of Parademons, who have come to Earth in search of three Mother Boxes. The film is a continuation of the DC Extended Universe, picking up after the events of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
The film was directed by Joss Whedon, his fifth feature following Serenity, The Avengers, Much Ado About Nothing and Avengers: Age of Ultron. Zack Snyder, who directed the previous instalment in the series, is also credited as director; this is the ninth of fifteen films he has directed, and it precedes Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021). The screenplay was written by Whedon and Chris Terrio. Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller and Jason Momoa lead a cast of 101 credited performers, supported by a crew of 444.
Released in November 2017, the film had a budget of 300 million USD and grossed 661 million USD worldwide. Reception was moderate across measures: a film critics' rating of 5.3/10 from 411 reviews, an IMDb rating of 6/10 from 503,000 votes and a TMDB rating of 6.1/10 from 13,947 votes.
What's left behind the scenes
- In October 2007, George Miller assembled the film's cast. It included D.J. Cotrona as Superman, Armie Hammer as Batman, model Megan Gale as Wonder Woman, rapper Common as Green Lantern – John Stewart, Adam Brody as the Flash – Barry Allen, Santiago Cabrera as Aquaman – Arthur Curry, and Hugh Keays-Byrne as Martian Manhunter – J'onn J'onzz. However, Miller was unable to begin filming immediately, and the actors cast in these roles moved on to other projects.
- In January 2008, Warner Brothers announced the indefinite shelving of the project and the release of the already cast actors. They determined that the plot of the future film required significant revisions, which were not feasible at the time due to the strike called by the Writers Guild of America (2007-2008).
- Work on the project took 10 years.
- Chris Terrio completed the screenplay in July 2015.
- In preparation for her role, Gal Gadot trained in wushu, kickboxing, swordsmanship, jiu-jitsu, and capoeira.
- Marit Allen was supposed to be the costume designer, but she passed away in November 2007.
- At one point, Lana and Lilly Wachowski, as well as Ben Affleck, were considered as directors of the film.
- In 2007, Jason Reitman was offered the opportunity to direct the film, but he declined.
- The final battle takes place in the north of Russia, but in the domestic localization, the scene unfolds in Poland.
- On May 23, 2017, the film's director, Zack Snyder, announced that due to his daughter's death, he could no longer work on the film and intended to spend more time with his family. He was replaced by Joss Whedon. Whedon had several scenes left to film and post-production work to complete.
- At one point during the film's production, Warner Brothers considered using motion capture technology.
- While working on the project, Zack Snyder was inspired by "Seven Samurai" and the "New Gods" comic book series.
- Major problems arose with Henry Cavill. At the time, he was filming the action movie "Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One," where his character wore a large mustache that the actor was contractually prohibited from shaving. He filmed "Justice League" with the mustache, which was later digitally removed.
