Beauty Shop

Beauty Shop follows Gina Norris, a talented hairdresser who moves to Atlanta so her daughter can attend a prestigious music school. She finds work in an upscale salon, but her egocentric boss Jorge takes credit for her styling and constantly criticizes her. Fed up, Gina quits and opens her own salon, buying a run-down space with help from a coworker and a wealthy client. She brings along some of Jorge's stylists and customers, and the new shop becomes a gathering place for a diverse neighborhood clientele. Jorge, who despises competition, tries to shut her down.

The 2005 comedy was directed by Bille Woodruff, his second feature after Honey in 2003 and the second of several music- and dance-related films he made across the following decade. Norman Vance Jr. and Kate Lanier wrote the screenplay, and Ice Cube, Queen Latifah and David Hoberman produced. Queen Latifah leads the cast as Gina, joined by Alicia Silverstone, Andie MacDowell, Alfre Woodard, Mena Suvari and Della Reese, among 38 credited cast members.

Made for 25 million USD, the film grossed 37 million USD worldwide. On IMDb it holds 5.7/10 from 20,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.3/10 from 568 votes, a slightly warmer response from that audience. The film belongs to the same comedic world as the Barbershop series, placing a predominantly female ensemble in a similar neighborhood setting.
