My Bloody Valentine
Short description
Tom Hanniger returns to his hometown in Harmony ten years after a mining accident on Valentine's Day killed five men. The only survivor, Harry Warden, awoke from a coma a year later and went on a killing spree before being shot. Now, as the anniversary approaches and the town prepares for another Valentine's Day, people begin dying again. Suspicion falls on Tom, and he and his former girlfriend Sarah set out to find the killer. Complicating matters, Sarah is now married to Tom's friend Axel, the town's police chief.
Directed by Patrick Lussier, My Bloody Valentine is a remake of the 1981 slasher film of the same name. It was released in 2009, the sixth film in Lussier's directing career, following White Noise 2: The Light and preceding Drive Angry. Todd Farmer and Zane Smith wrote the screenplay, and Jack L. Murray produced. Jensen Ackles leads the cast as Tom, with Jaime King as Sarah, Kerr Smith as Axel, and Tom Atkins as Burke.
Made for 15 million dollars, the film took in about 101 million dollars worldwide at the box office. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.4 out of 10 from 65,000 votes, and on TMDB a 5.6 from 1,355 votes. A film critics' rating of 5.8 out of 10 from 108 reviews places it slightly above the audience scores on both sites.
What's left behind the scenes
- Screenwriter Todd Farmer appeared on screen as the driver, Frank. In the credits, his wife, Melanie, was mentioned in the “special thanks” section for allowing him to undress in front of the camera.
- The first two characters killed in front of the audience were named Jason and Michael. Their names are a reference to characters from the "Friday the 13th" and "Halloween" franchises, where the maniacs don't utter a word. The way they die is a direct reference to the films in those franchises.
- According to a flyer on the wall, Valentine's Day, February 14th, falls on a Saturday. This means that the preceding day was Friday the 13th.
- After the film's release, Betsy Rue shared that the idea to film a scene in which her character, Irene, appears in the parking lot without clothes was her own. This was the actress's first experience with explicit scenes. The filmmakers had clarified beforehand whether she genuinely wanted to appear nude on camera. They initially tried to cover Irene with a sheet, but it soon became clear that this wouldn't work, and Rue decided to run completely naked, stating that it would be more believable and in keeping with her character.
