Waterland follows Tom Crick, a high school history teacher whose life has come apart. His relationship with his students has grown strained and his marriage to his wife, Mary, is under pressure. Rather than teach the usual syllabus, he begins telling his class the story of his own youth, weaving in the history of three generations of his family. Set in the English fens, the film moves between his present-day struggles and the memories he shares with his pupils.
Stephen Gyllenhaal directed, working from a screenplay by Peter Prince. It was his second feature, following Promised a Miracle in 1988 and preceding A Dangerous Woman in 1993. Jeremy Irons plays Tom Crick, with Sinéad Cusack as Mary. Grant Warnock and Lena Headey appear as the younger Tom and Mary, and Ethan Hawke plays Matthew Price. Twenty actors are credited. The British production was made for about 10 million dollars and took roughly 1 million dollars worldwide.
On IMDb, the film's critics' rating stands at 6 out of 10 from 15 reviews, while on TMDB it holds 6.3 out of 10 from 40 votes. Both measures point to a modest reception. The gap between its budget and its box office return indicates the film found only a limited theatrical audience.
