Brent Magna, a former race car driver, is living in Sofia, Bulgaria, when his wife is abducted. A mysterious caller reaches him by phone and makes his demands clear: Brent must carry out a series of driving tasks in a customized Ford Shelby GT500 Super Snake if he wants to see his wife alive again. The caller tracks his every move through cameras mounted in the car, and a young hacker who ends up in the passenger seat becomes part of the ordeal. The police are soon pursuing the car as well.
Courtney Solomon directed the film, his third feature after Dungeons & Dragons in 2000 and An American Haunting in 2005, working from a screenplay by Sean Finegan and Gregg Maxwell Parker. Ethan Hawke plays Brent, Selena Gomez appears as the hacker known as The Kid, and Jon Voight voices the unseen caller. Rebecca Budig, Paul Freeman and Bruce Payne round out the cast. Joel Silver, Moshe Diamant and Solomon produced the film, a co-production between Bulgaria, the United Kingdom, the United States and Switzerland.
Released on August 29, 2013, Getaway runs 90 minutes. Made for a budget of 18 million USD, it took in about 11 million USD worldwide, less than its cost. Audience response was weak: on IMDb it holds 4.4/10 from around 26,000 votes, and on TMDB 5/10 from roughly 680 votes. A critics' rating of 2.9/10 from 140 reviews places it below even those audience scores.
