Boarding Gate

Sandra, an Italian woman living in London, is caught in a destructive relationship with Miles Rennberg, a wealthy and manipulative financier. When she finally breaks away from him, she discovers that his death was not simply her own decision: a contract had been arranged through Lester Wang, her lover, with whom she plans to start over in Beijing. Their meeting in Hong Kong never goes as intended, and Sandra finds herself cornered by forces she did not anticipate, including Lester's wife, Sue.

Olivier Assayas directed and wrote the film, the seventh of the fifteen features he has directed to date, following To Each His Own Cinema and preceding Carlos. Asia Argento plays Sandra, with Michael Madsen as Miles, Carl Ng as Lester, Kelly Lin as Sue and Kim Gordon as Kay. François Margolin produced the film, a co-production between Hong Kong, Luxembourg and France.

Boarding Gate drew limited enthusiasm from audiences: it holds a rating of 5.1 out of 10 on IMDb from around 4,400 votes, and 5 out of 10 on TMDB from roughly 121 votes. A critics' rating of 5.4 out of 10 across 45 reviews places professional assessments slightly above the audience scores on IMDb, though all three measures sit near the middle of their scales.
