Short description

Fourteen-year-old Duncan is spending the summer at a coastal town with his mother Pam and her boyfriend Trent, whose criticism and put-downs make the boy withdraw further into himself. Trent's daughter comes along too. The run-down Water Wizz water park becomes Duncan's refuge, and its manager Owen, a warm and outgoing man, takes the teenager under his wing, drawing him out of his shell and toward a girl his own age.

The Way Way Back is a 2013 American comedy-drama written and directed by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, and it is the first feature either of them directed, ahead of Downhill. Liam James plays Duncan, with Steve Carell as Trent, Toni Collette as Pam, AnnaSophia Robb as Susanna, Sam Rockwell as Owen and Allison Janney as Betty. Tom Rice and Kevin J. Walsh produced; twenty-five cast members are credited. The film runs 103 minutes.

Made for about 5 million dollars, it took roughly 26 million worldwide, a strong return on its production cost. On IMDb it holds 7.4 out of 10 from about 164,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.1 out of 10 from around 2,000 votes. A critics' rating of 7.4 out of 10 from 184 reviews sits level with the IMDb audience figure and above the smaller TMDB sample, indicating broad agreement between reviewers and viewers.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The screenplay, originally titled 'Road Home,' was written in 2007, but the title had to be changed over time to avoid confusion with Peter Weir's drama 'The Way Back' (2010). The title plays on the term 'way back seat,' which refers to the rearmost, often hidden, seat in the cargo area of a van. In the 1970s, this is what the third row seat in a van was called.
  • In one scene, Owen tells Duncan: 'I hate clowns. Just kidding. I really hate them.' Sam Rockwell, who played Owen, starred in the horror film 'Clownhouse' (Victor Salva, 1989), in which his character and his brothers are terrorized by escaped mental patients dressed as clowns.
  • It took only 10 days to film all the scenes featuring Steve Carell.
  • During filming, Maya Rudolph was expecting her fourth child. Her pregnancy is visible in the scene of the party before Lewis's departure.
