Keith Ripley, an experienced jewel thief based in New York, is in debt to a Russian crime boss and needs one more score to settle it. He brings in Gabriel Martin, a younger thief from Miami, to help him take two valuable Fabergé eggs from a heavily protected vault. A police lieutenant is watching the pair, and Ripley's goddaughter Alexandra is part of the world they move in. The film follows the planning and execution of the robbery and the pressure closing in on both men.
Mimi Leder directed Thick as Thieves, which came out in 2009, between Pay It Forward and On the Basis of Sex in her filmography. Ted Humphrey wrote the screenplay, and Les Weldon, Danny Lerner and Avi Lerner produced. Morgan Freeman plays Ripley and Antonio Banderas plays Martin, with Robert Forster as Lieutenant Weber, Radha Mitchell as Alexandra Korolenko, Tom Hardy as Michaels and Corey Johnson as Voutiritsas. The production, mounted by Nu Image, Millennium Media, Equity Pictures and EFO Films, had a budget of 25 million dollars.
The film has drawn modest scores from audiences: 6 out of 10 on IMDb from more than 35,000 votes and 6 out of 10 on TMDB, though from a much smaller group of voters. A film critics' rating of 3.8 out of 10, based on five reviews, is clearly lower than the audience scores. At 104 minutes, it is a compact crime thriller built around a single elaborate heist and the competing loyalties of the people involved.
