Flatliners
Short description
A group of medical students becomes fixated on finding out what lies beyond death. Led by Nelson Wright, they take turns deliberately stopping their own hearts, letting their vital signs flatline before their friends revive them. Each returns with a private vision of what he or she encountered, and the group pushes the experiments further, staying under longer each time. What follows is not a scientific breakthrough but a reckoning: people from their pasts, some of whom they wronged, begin to appear to them, and the students are forced to confront what they did and find a way to make amends.
Joel Schumacher directed the film, the fourth of the twenty-one features he made, arriving between The Lost Boys and Dying Young, from a screenplay by Peter Filardi. Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, William Baldwin and Oliver Platt play the students, with Kimberly Scott among the supporting cast. Michael Douglas and Rick Bieber produced for Columbia Pictures and Stonebridge Entertainment, and the film cost about 26 million dollars, earning roughly 61 million worldwide.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.6 from around 98,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.5 from about 1,795 votes. A critics' rating of 5.7 from 54 reviews places it below both audience scores.
