Grumpier Old Men

Set in the small Minnesota town of Wabasha, Grumpier Old Men continues the story of next-door neighbors Max Goldman and John Gustafson, whose long-running feud has cooled now that John has married Ariel. The peace is disrupted when Maria Ragetti arrives and turns the local bait shop into an Italian restaurant, alarming residents who fear it will drive the fish away. Max and John scheme to push her out, but Maria refuses to back down, and the conflict takes an unexpected turn as Max's feelings toward her change.

Howard Deutch directed the film, the sixth in his directing career after Getting Even with Dad, working from a screenplay by Mark Steven Johnson. Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon return as Max and John, with Ann-Margret as Ariel, Sophia Loren as Maria, Daryl Hannah as Melanie and Burgess Meredith as Grandpa Gustafson.

Released in December 1995, the film had a budget of 25 million dollars and took about 72 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.5 from 444 votes. A critics' rating of 4.2 from 19 reviews is noticeably lower than the audience score on IMDb, indicating that reviewers were less favourable toward the comedy than viewers were.
