Short description
Transcendence centers on Dr. Will Caster, a leading researcher in artificial intelligence who is developing a machine capable of combining human emotion with collective intelligence. His work has made him famous, but it has also turned him into a target for radical anti-technology extremists who fear where such research might lead. When an attack leaves him dying, his wife Evelyn and his friend Max face a decision about whether to continue his experiments. Their choice has consequences they cannot control.
The film was released in 2014 and marked the directorial debut of Wally Pfister, a longtime cinematographer, working from a screenplay by Jack Paglen. Johnny Depp plays Will, with Rebecca Hall as Evelyn, Paul Bettany as Max, Morgan Freeman as Joseph Tagger, Cillian Murphy as Agent Donald Buchanan and Kate Mara as Bree. It is a science fiction thriller about the promise and danger of machine intelligence.
Made for around 100 million US dollars, the film returned roughly 103 million worldwide, a modest result against its cost. Audiences were mixed: viewers on IMDb rate it 6.2 out of 10 from about 246,000 votes, and on TMDB it holds 6.1 out of 10 from nearly 6,000 votes. A film critics' score of 4.6 out of 10 from 225 reviews places it well below the audience ratings.
