Short description

White Bird in a Blizzard is a drama-thriller set in the late 1980s, centred on Kat Connor, a seventeen-year-old girl living in a small town. Her mother Eve, a beautiful and enigmatic housewife, vanishes one day without leaving any word behind, and searches for her turn up nothing. Kat is busy with school, friends and her first sexual experiences, including an affair with a neighbourhood boy named Phil, and she appears almost untroubled by her mother's absence. Over time, however, she finds that the disappearance has marked her more deeply than she wanted to admit, and strange dreams begin to trouble her. A visit home from college finally forces her to confront what really happened.

The film was directed by Gregg Araki, who also wrote the screenplay. It sits between Kaboom and I Want Your Sex in the list of films he has directed, following earlier work such as Mysterious Skin and Smiley Face. Shailene Woodley plays Kat, with Eva Green as Eve, Christopher Meloni as her father Brock, Shiloh Fernandez as Phil, Angela Bassett as Dr. Thaler and Gabourey Sidibe as Beth.

Released in 2014 and running 92 minutes, the film is a co-production between the United States and France. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.2 from 779 votes, while the critics' score stands at 5.6 from 90 reviews, so audiences have rated it somewhat more favourably than critics did.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Director and screenwriter Gregg Araki intentionally made Kat Connors (played by Shailene Woodley) resemble Winona Ryder as she looked in the late 1980s.
  • The club was created in an office center located in a warehouse building. It was based on the Helter Skelter club in Los Angeles.
  • To help the actors immerse themselves in the atmosphere of 1988, Gregg Araki sent them music videos from the American industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails from that year.
  • While working on the screenplay, Gregg Araki envisioned actor Mark Indelicato, whom he had seen in the series 'Ugly Betty' (2006-2010), in the role of Mickey. Other actors auditioned for the part, but in Araki's opinion, Indelicato was the best fit.
  • According to the script, Kat was supposed to take a knife and throw it at the wall during lunch, but it was decided not to film this scene.
  • The scene featuring the main character and her mother (played by Shailene Woodley and Eva Green, respectively) that opens the film was originally intended to be a flashback.
  • In the script, the main character learned the lock combination in a dream, but this scene was cut during editing.
